England’s Golf Coast is a showcase of pure links heritage. You can spend a week here, based between the city of Liverpool and town of Southport and play a fantastic line up of courses.
At the heart of the itinerary are three ‘Royal’ Open venues. Royal Birkdale is universally admired for its flawless presentation and dramatic dune corridors, Royal Lytham rewards precision with its strategic bunkering, and Royal Liverpool offers a historic and ever evolving challenge beside the Dee Estuary.
Beyond the majors, the region is packed with exceptional courses that sit just a step below the Open rota yet feel every bit as memorable. Formby delivers a wonderful mix of links and pines, Hillside is renowned for some of the best back nine landforms in the country, and West Lancashire continues to rise in reputation. But there are more still – Southport & Ainsdale, Wallasey, Formby Ladies. The list goes on. Together they create a deep and varied itinerary that keeps golfers engaged from the first tee to the last.
Royal Birkdale delivers the pure essence of links golf and is often cited as England’s standout course. Its holes move smoothly between tall dunes, creating a landscape that feels both dramatic and entirely natural. Before teeing off, enjoy a coffee in the art deco clubhouse where the sweeping view over the 18th sets the tone for the round ahead.
Birkdale is known for being fair and beautifully defined. Elevated tees reveal each challenge clearly, with no blind shots, encouraging confident driving while demanding precise approach play. Its roll call of champions includes Palmer, Jacklin and Watson. Walking these fairways offers a genuine sense of following in the footsteps of icons.
Royal Liverpool, known affectionately as Hoylake, is a thinking golfer’s links. It lacks the giant dunes of some Open venues, yet its challenge is no less formidable, built around precision, smart course management and the steady breeze that rarely lets up. Out of bounds features throughout the round, demanding focus from the opening tee shot to the walk up eighteen. Bunkers are placed with real intent, making accuracy essential, and the striking new par three fifteenth provides a modern highlight against the wide coastal horizon.
With a history that includes more than a dozen Open Championships and winners such as Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, Hoylake remains one of Britain’s most exacting and rewarding tests.
Hillside sits just a short walk from Royal Birkdale, sharing the same stunning coastline while offering a character all its own. The opening holes play over gentler terrain, easing you in before the course climbs into bold, wind-shaped dunes. The back nine is the star, with wide, flowing fairways that weave through grand natural valleys, giving each hole a sense of space and discovery.
Hillside has earned its reputation through both its setting and the events it has staged, including the British Masters, the Amateur Championship and multiple Open qualifiers. Challenging yet honest, it provides a superb test for top players and a memorable experience for any visitor.
Formby delivers a rare blend of links character and heathland texture, shaped by towering pines and sweeping dunes. Its evolution includes the hands of Willie Park Jr., James Braid and Harry Colt, whose combined influence gives the course its layered personality. Early holes track the railway and call for precise ball striking, before the routing turns into woodland corridors and then out toward bold, sculpted dunes.
The result is a layout full of contrasts and quiet drama, never relying on spectacle yet always engaging. Consistently ranked among the top courses in England, Formby stands out as a memorable stop along England’s Golf Coast.
Formby Ladies Golf Club offers a one of a kind round. Believed to be the only course in the UK with a ladies only membership, its compact routing sits entirely within the main Formby layout. This is classic heathland golf, full of variety and subtle challenge. The holes are short on the card yet demand sharp decision making, with narrow fairways, shifting dunes and heather that quickly punishes anything offline.
Nature is ever present, from red squirrels and deer to the rich mix of trees and heather framing each shot. After play, visitors can relax in the welcoming clubhouse and enjoy its much loved home baked cakes. A visit to Formby Ladies is an experience golfers never forget.
Stableford scoring. It’s a fitting legacy for a course that rewards positive play and invites bold decisions from the start. The front nine weaves through striking dunes before the layout shifts inland across more open, rolling ground, with wind and clever bunkering shaping the challenge throughout.
From the elevated fourth tee, the panorama over Liverpool Bay creates one of the most thrilling drives in English golf. The round then settles into a rhythm that blends charm, strategy and variety in equal measure. Often overlooked beside its neighbours, Wallasey delivers a memorable mix of scenery and shot-making, making it one of the most rewarding stops on England’s Golf Coast.
Southport & Ainsdale delivers a classic links adventure shaped by tall dunes, firm turf and the ever present coastal breeze. Designed by James Braid, the course moves naturally through rumpled fairways, flashes of heather and clever bunkering that rewards clear thinking as much as pure ball striking. Greens sit proudly on plateaus or nestle between dunes, creating a rhythm that feels both strategic and wonderfully instinctive.
History runs deep here. S&A hosted the Ryder Cup twice in the 1930s, and today remains a respected Open qualifying venue. Standout holes appear throughout the round, none more so than the bold par five 16th with its thrilling blind second shot. It is a course of heritage, personality and genuine links spirit.
West Lancashire has a quietly distinctive character. Founded in 1873, it is one of England’s oldest clubs, set on pure links beside the Mersey estuary. The landscape feels timeless, with firm fairways, natural dunes and a steady coastal breeze shaping every decision. Accuracy from the tee is vital, as raised greens, gentle contours and well placed bunkers reward thoughtful positioning. The routing moves between impressive dune corridors and more open stretches to create a smooth, satisfying rhythm.
The round is full of memorable touches. The second’s centreline bunkers test your nerve, the eleventh runs beside the railway, and the thirteenth reveals wide views across Liverpool Bay to North Wales. West Lancashire is a course of enduring quality and honest, rewarding challenge.
